Cherry Bounce
Cherry Bounce was one of George Washington’s favorite drinks. Not commonly produced or consumed today, this brandy-based drink was very popular in the eighteenth century.
In 1687, Robert DePriest brought cherry trees from southern France to northern Virginia. In January 1759, he attended George and Martha Washington's Wedding, providing four barrels of Cherry Bounce to the festivities. George Washington enjoyed the drink so much, he packed a “canteen” of Cherry Bounce when he traveled.
Making this fruity, spiced cordial requires time and effort. First, the cherries need to be pitted, halved, and mashed. Next, a blend of spices is added and the concoction is set aside for two weeks. If you would like to make it yourself, click here for the Cherry Bounce Recipe.
