Cow Pastures near the White House

This photograph shows cows gazing in the pastures across the Tiber Creek from the White House. This photo is from the 1860s, circa the Civil War. The Tiber Creek is still free-flowing, and not a sewage drain under Constitution Avenue. These cows are grazing in the area of the Jefferson Pier Marker. On the night of the Great Upheaval, in 1848, cow pastures to right side of this picture were lifted into the air, necessitating the creation of the Washington Monument’s sloped hill (not pictured).

Bonus photograph! Sheep munching on the White House lawn. Past the White House you can see the roof of the State, War, and Navy Building. This is the overdone wedding cake building the Powell family enters on the night of the Obturavi attack in 1898.
