Foggy Bottom
In The Hesperus Prophecy, the Powell family lives in the Foggy Bottom area of Washington, D.C. On the night of the Obturavi attack, the Clypeate escorts the Powells through the neighborhood’s back alleys to the State, War, and Navy Building (SWAN).
Foggy Bottom is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., extending west to east from the Potomac River to the White House, the National Mall along Consitution Avenue marking the southern border, and Pennsylvania Avenue the northern.
When the Powells lived in Foggy Bottom, the area was a working-class neighborhood as well as home to many industries including breweries, lime kilns, and cement plants.
When the Powells are escorted to the SWAN building, they weave through Foggy Bottom before arriving in Lafayette Square, the White House directly across Pennsylvania Avenue and adjacent to the SWAN building. Despite the Clypeate’s precautions and circuitous route, the Obturavi have a nasty surprise waiting for the Powell family.
