Depression Era Menus - Frugal Cooking and Recipes
Beginning with the stock market crash on October 24th, 1929, the United States economy dived into the Great Depression. Due to widespread unemployment, food became expensive and families got creative with recipes.
Some recipes were truly disgusting, like Hobo Stew seasoned with tobacco and lint, though some contained surprisingly effective substitutions. Tomato soup could be used instead of oil, and anything could substitute for meat or fruit.
