George Washington’s Death and Final Words
In The Hesperus Prophecy, as George Washington lies on his deathbed, he holds a short conversation with Tobias Lear. Most of Washington’s dialogue is taken directly from Tobias Lear’s journal, which contains the only written record of our first president’s final words. You will also notice George Washington is referred to as a general, not president, keeping with Tobias Lear’s documentation.
The Tobias Lear journal, housed in the archives of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, contains Lear’s written records from December 10, 1799 to July 4, 1801. This journal details the death of Washington, the President’s final wishes, funeral perpetrations and funeral, and Washington’s entombment.
The journal is 70 pages long, with interspersed blank pages. In The Hesperus Prophecy, these pages are intentionally erased by Tobias Lear, having contained Clypeate secrets that can’t fall into Obturavi hands.
