U.S. Army Corps of Intelligence Police

In The Hesperus Prophecy, the U.S. Army’s official, top-secret report on the SS Valencia, codename Cracked Snowglobe, is filed by the Corps of Intelligence Police (CIP). The Corps of Intelligence Police operated from 1917 to 1941 as the intelligence agency of the U.S. Army, investigating and preventing acts of espionage, sabotage, and subversion against U.S. military forces and assets. The SS Valencia’s possible rendezvous with Germany’s MS Schwabenland guaranteed the CIP’s involvement. Their report concluded the SS Valencia sank and the crew drowned, all except Professor Riordan. As James points out to Director Bowen, the government investigation could have been intentionally manipulated to reach these conclusions, and perhaps the SS Valencia’s true fate is vastly different. The director can’t be certain, but he’s hopeful, knowing his fellow Clypeate are clever and resourceful.
